What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder is a a general term that describes a variety of issues with your jaw joints (temporomandibular joints). Inflammation, a dislocated disk, arthritis in the joints, and more can cause chronic severe pain throughout the jaw, mouth, and face. Often a factor of bruxism, TMJ disorder can also be caused by any condition that places undue stress on your jaw muscles and joints. An oral appliance can help alleviate the pain of TMJ disorder by helping your jaw rest comfortably enough for the joints to heal and the inflammation to subside.
What is Bruxism?
Bruxism describes the frequent and unconscious grinding of your teeth, and can be the result of an imbalance in your bite, general anxiety, or a host of other issues. If not treated, the grinding can lead to extensive tooth damage and the need for comprehensive restorative treatment.
Treatment Options: TMJ Disorder and Bruxism
Patients who suffer from TMJ pain or bruxism (grinding or clenching) may need further treatment. We fabricate oral appliances such as night guards, snore guards, and NTI’s to help relieve this pain. An examination will be done to decide which appliance is appropriate for you.
